Upgrade of 4G Network by ARTC
The Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) is in the process of implementing a 4G network upgrade for its National Train Communications System (NTCS), with completion expected by June 2024. The NTCS relies on the Telstra mobile network and In Cab Equipment (ICE) units to facilitate train-to-network control communications across the ARTC network nationwide.
This NTCS upgrade aims to enhance communication services and capabilities for ARTC and train operators, ensuring that network equipment is ready for a future 5G upgrade. The upgrade work is being carried out at 81 locations across Australia, encompassing the addition of nine mobile tower sites and 13 tunnel upgrades. Some of these locations will also improve mobile phone coverage in remote areas, benefiting local communities.
ARTC is collaborating with its customers to support the transition by upgrading 1,600 units on their locomotives to ICE units by Base2. This ensures the seamless movement of goods and people across Australia.
Brad Moorhouse, ARTC Group Executive Engineering and Systems, emphasized that the 4G coverage update will primarily bolster train-to-train control communications, network maintenance staff, and network control for both freight and passenger services throughout the ARTC network. The upgrade aligns with the need to stay current with technology changes, enhancing resilience and services in preparation for the future implementation of 5G technology. It is a coordinated effort within the rail industry to upgrade ICE units, encompassing various fleets, and ensures the provision of an interoperable communication system for operational voice communication between train crew and Network Controllers across large parts of Australia.
