The construction of the $2.1 billion; 12 km light rail project featuring 19 stops across the city has seen new progress. The rail stopping at Moore Park; Randwick and Kingsford will extend from Circular Quay to Central Station via George Street. Light rail construction is really coming along with more than seven kilometres of track installed so far; more than one kilometre of which is in the CBD; Coordinator General Marg Prendergast said. Once some of the hoardings come down; people will be able to see that 100% track has been installed; including paving laid between the rails down this stretch of George Street. She added the public will get a glimpse of the project from the diverting traffic over George Street. Due to the upcoming traffic changes around Circular Quay; motorists would need to take alternative route near Circular Quay. Alfred Street between Loftus and George Street; and Loftus Street between Reiby Place and Alfred Street will be closed because of the light rail construction. One northbound lane and one southbound lane will remain opened on George Street between Grosvenor and Alfred Street to ensure the access to the Rocks precinct. With the development of Circular Quay terminus; pedestrians can interchange between ferry; train; bus and light rail and hence improving the access to popular precinct. Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Andrew Constance thanked the public for their patience. It's expected that trips into the city centre will balloon to about 780;000 per day by 2031; which is why we're creating a better; fully-integrated transport network for Sydneysiders; Mr Constance said. In early 2019; the CBD and South East Light Rail are expected to provide high frequency 'turn up and go' transport services from Circular Quay to Randwick and Kingsford.
