Automated vehicles are a major trend in transportation and although autonomous cars are still in the developments and will be launched in the future, automatic train operations have been around for 50 years.
The London Underground launched the automatic train for the Victoria line in 1968! Now, there are over 100 cities around the world with the same technology.
Australia is looking into Automatic Train Operations (ATO) to improve the efficiency and performance of the rail infrastructure. Sydney leads the way with this as it is planning to operate two separate rail systems with automated trains, between Cudgegong Road and Chatswood by mid-2019.
Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth look to follow in the footsteps and test the systems too, showing that ATO is a trend that is here to stay.
