Australia's construction industry grapples with a digital skills gap

Australia's construction industry is grappling with significant challenges, particularly the digital skills gap, which hampers productivity, according to a recent article. The eBook "Constructing tomorrow: building a dynamic workforce for the future" by Autodesk sheds light on these challenges, highlighting project inefficiencies, delays, and cost overruns due to insufficient digital skills. Sumit Oberoi, Senior Manager and Industry Strategist at Autodesk APAC, points out that the industry still faces difficulties post-pandemic, including a shortage of skilled labor, expensive materials, and disruptions in the supply chain. These challenges are compounded by a lack of digital skills and an aging workforce, hindering digital adoption.

The shortage of digital skills is not limited to the construction sector alone. The APEC Digital Skills Gap survey reveals that 75% of businesses across various industries in different countries face a significant digital skills gap. This poses a serious challenge for construction and engineering businesses competing with other sectors for a limited pool of talent.

Despite these challenges, there is optimism within the construction industry. The State of Digital Adoption in Construction 2023 report indicates that 60% of businesses in the Asia Pacific region anticipate positive revenue growth in the 2023 financial year. Many of these businesses aim to enhance efficiency by increasing technology adoption, with 89% of them having invested in or purchased new technology during the previous financial year.

To address the digital skills divide, businesses must confront the existing shortage of digital skills. The eBook emphasizes the urgency of cultural reform and the need to embrace digitization to attract a diverse range of skills essential for transformation. By adopting technology, construction companies can shed the perception of being outdated, foster innovation, and attract tech-savvy talent.

To achieve transformative change, businesses require a technology partner that provides comprehensive support, training, and a commitment to keeping the workforce updated with the latest advancements. Thomas Bierbaum, APAC Manager of Customer Success at Autodesk Construction Solutions, emphasizes the importance of partnering with technology providers who not only offer ongoing support but also possess a deep understanding of the industry. This ensures that businesses have more than just a software vendor but a trusted advisor who guides them through the digitalization journey.
